Nepal - Dolpo Trek with Phoksundo Lake (12 Days)

Trekking in Dolpo region is considered as very panoramic trekking in the remote place of western Nepal and is isolated in the trans-Himalayan zone, between the Tibetan plateau and the Dhaulagiri Himalayan range. The geography of Upper Dolpo is the combination of Tibetan plateau and Lower Dolpo which includes some flatlands with deep gullies and narrow valleys which is unique for most of the peoples. The local people follow Tibetan Buddhism and they have a diverse culture and religious beliefs. Dolpo trek is one of the most popular trekking destinations of Nepal. The value of this trek has been increased because it passes through the world's deepest Lake Shey-Phoksundo Lake with Turquoise color, which is the alpine freshwater and does not contain aquatic life.

The trek starts with a flight from Kathmandu to Juphal, via Nepalgunj. After the flights, the trek starts and goes through Dunai, Chepka, Sunduwa, and Ringmo before turning back to Jufal. The trek also takes you to Caravan Yak Drop point before arriving at the Shey Phoksundo viewpoint, which provides an amazing view over the lake.

Upon your arrival at the Kathmandu airport, our representative will meet, greet and welcome you and transfer you to your confirmed hotel. You can rest, relax and enjoy your time at the hotel or you can stroll around the Thamel area.

Accommodation:  Overnight in Yatri Suites & Spa or similar in Kathmandu.

After breakfast, our office representative will come to assist you at the hotel and transfer you to the airport for your flight to Nepalgunj. The flight will give you good views of the Himalayas towards the North. Upon arrival, you will be transferred to your hotel. There will be a time in the evening to have a good look around the town, which is 3 km from the Nepal-India border.

Accommodation:  Overnight in best available lodge in Nepalgunj.

After breakfast early in the morning, you will fly to Juphal airport of Dolpa, which takes about 35 minutes. From Juphal, you will commence your first-day trek to Dunai. The first two hours are steep downhill before arriving at the foothill on the bank of BheriRiver. The trek goes through terraced fields and a narrow canyon which leads you to a larger village called Dunai.

Accommodation:  Overnight will be in a tented camp.

Today, after having breakfast, you will commence trekking and cross Bheri via a suspension bridge in Dunai and continue walking towards Suligad, the confluence of Bheri and Suli River. Here, you will enter into the SheyPhoksundo National Park office for registration. Now, you will walk through the rocky trail where there are some bushes on the way. You will cross the river by a wooden bridge and continue uphill on the left, above 150 feet of Suli. The narrow trail leads to a wide riverside called Jalash and leads uphill on the cliff, through a shade of Maple, Oak and Pine trees before a quick mild descend leads to the river. From the riverbank, you will ascend uphill for about 1.5 hours to reach Chepka.

Accommodation:  Overnight will be in a tented camp.

After your breakfast in the morning, you initiate the day's trek to Sunduwa. The initial part is quite pleasant and comfortable going through a forest of giant pines, oaks, maple, walnut, and Birch which offers a wider trail mostly running along the river bank. In the morning, one can see the footprints of larger mammals, primates, and horned herbivores on the dark soil. You will continue walking and cross a smaller stream. The trail widens unbelievably as you are reaching Boarding.

Accommodation:  Overnight will be in a tented camp.

Today, you will walk for a few hours but via a difficult and exhilarating trail. The trail on the cliff is narrow and steep with confusing runoffs of loose soil and inhospitable rocks. The vegetation changes dramatically with the presence of thin Juniper shrubs and a few Cypresses. The steep climb leads you to the waterfall viewpoint where you can get a lovely view. The steep climbing portion ends above 30 meters from this point and provides the first glance of turquoise SheyPhoksundo Lake. From here, your camping site at the lakeside is just 25 minutes of easy downhill through pine groves, chortens, and the village of Ringmo.

Accommodation:  Overnight will be in a tented camp.

The village of Ringmo lies on the bank of SheyPhoksundo Lake. About 20 Tibetan style houses are clustered in a close-knit fashion to form the village surrounded by scattered Chortens. The people there are subsistence farmers and also raise Yaks and some horses. Their lifestyle is traditional and simple. There is an old B’on monastery in Ringmo. The chortens at the entrance of the monastery is fascinating. There is also a small museum at the monastery. The Lama will kindly guide you through the monastery and briefly speak about B’on.

Accommodation:  Overnight will be in a tented camp.

The best spot to view the entire lake is from the viewpoint, about 200 meters above the village. The hike to the viewpoint passes through the Yak Drop point as featured in Eric Valley’s “CARAVAN”, on through a pine grove and a steeper ascent. You will certainly feel like you are in paradise as you see the picturesque view of the lake and the surroundings. The shape of SheyPhoksundo Lake resembles a lowercase Latin alphabet “r”. The Lake is drained out by a river that creates a forceful waterfall halfway through Sunduwa and Ringmo. This waterfall is one of the majestic waterfalls in Nepal.

The crystal clear water of Phoksundo forms a dramatic, giant cotton ball effect while making a thunderous landing about 100 feet below. The vegetation around the waterfall is rich with thick pine forests. Musk deer, Blue Sheep, Himalayan Thar, and the rare Snow Leopards are also sighted around the waterfall. Today, you might get an opportunity to interact with the local “Amchis”. Amchis are the traditional healers of Dolpo. Their practice is still largely prevalent in upper Dolpo. The Amchis use a variety of natural herbs and minerals to cure illnesses. Recognizing the importance of Amchis and in an effort to promote the understanding of traditional indigenous medicine, an Amchi hospital is set up in Sundown.

Accommodation:  Overnight will be in a tented camp.

You will have your breakfast in Sunduwa and commence walking down to Chepka. The downhill trail is quite pleasant but steep at some parts. Alone lammergeyer can be sighted on top of the ridge.

Accommodation:  Overnight will be in a tented camp.

After breakfast, you will start walking. The initial part of the trail is quite easy as there are no major uphills or steep downhills. However, when you are reaching Juphal, you must walk over a difficult trail for 2.5 hours. The distance covered today is quite long.

Accommodation: Overnight will be in the best available local lodge.

After having your breakfast, you will be transferred to Juphal airport to catch the flight to Nepalgunj. From Nepalgunj, you will catch a flight to Kathmandu. Upon your arrival in Kathmandu, you will be transferred to your hotel.
