Bhutan - Dagala Thousand Lake Trek (11 Days)

Dagala Thousand Lake Trek offers magnificent picturesque lakes, Alpine meadows, abundant wildlife and many yak herder camps set to a backdrop of magnificent panoramic mountains standing high. The centrepiece of this communion with nature is time spent exploring the high altitude lakes overflowing with trout fish and mystical history. This trek is highly recommended to those trekkers who want to hike on higher altitude with ease as the most of the trek are of short duration with an inclusion of a few climbing steps, one can witness the beauty of a forest having wild flora and fauna too. The trekkers can capture a glimpse of the local nomadic lifestyle as well. And the Talakha Monastery is simply a place to have a bliss moment for you.

This itinerary is a guideline only and we will follow the itinerary as far as possible but due to weather conditions, health conditions, natural disasters and other unfavorable phenomenon your guide might decide to amend or cancel the itinerary for your own safety. Your guide will help you at any time with providing information regarding conditions and safety during the treks.

The flight to Paro is one of the most spectacular mountain flights in the world, with a constantly changing panorama of some of the highest mountains on earth. Our Bhutan Travel Bureau representative will meet you at Paro airport. After lunch, enjoy afternoon sightseeing around Paro, including a visit to the National Museum, Ta Dzong. This museum houses many religious relics, works of art and handicrafts offering a great orientation into Bhutan’s historical and cultural past. Next, visit the Rimpong Dzong to see the painting of the great saint Milarepa, considered as the master of meditation by the Bhutanese and believed to have attained enlightenment in a lifetime. Dzong’s are large monasteries and district administrative centers, which were once strategic forts. Afterwards, walk to the beautiful cantilever wooden bridge still in use.

After breakfast hike to Taktsang Monastery. The trail is broad and the walk of approximately 1.5 to 2 hours uphill takes you high above the Paro valley. The view of Taktsang Monastery built on a sheer cliff face 900 meters above the valley floor is a spectacular sight. The great Guru Rimpoche is said to have flown here on the back of a tigress when he brought the teachings of the Buddhist Dharma to Bhutan in the 8th Century. Nearby there is a teahouse where you can stop for lunch. In the afternoon drive to the ruins of the 17th Century Drukgyel Dzong, a historic monument built by the Shabdrung to commemorate his victory against invading Tibetans in 1644. In fine weather, the towering peak of the sacred Mount Jomolhari (7314m) appears as a stunning backdrop. On the return drive to Paro, visit 7th Century Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the 108 temples constructed by the Tibetan king Songtsen Gampo. Kyichu is built like the Jokhang in Lhasa.

After having Breakfast in the hotel, you will commence driving downstream alongside the Pa Chu (Paro River) to its confluence with Wang Chu (Thimphu River) then up the valley to Thimphu. A few miles before arriving Thimphu, we will see Simtokha Dzong, Kingdom’s oldest fortress which is now used as Dzongkha language school of Bhutan. Memorial Chorten, built in the memory of the Late Third King of Bhutan. Tashichho Dzong, Thimphu’s most impressive building situated at the banks of Wang Chu. It now houses the National Assembly, King's Throne room and also the summer residence of Chief of the monk body. In the evening, take a walk in the Thimphu market and town.

Have your breakfast in the morning and today you will visit the Painting School where the centuries-old art of Bhutanese paintings is taught. National Library is another interesting place to visit, which has a vast and unique collection of ancient Buddhist texts, manuscripts. Traditional Medicine Institute where centuries-old healing arts are still practised. Handicrafts Emporium where exotic weaves in silk, wool, cotton, silver jewellery, carpets, thanka paintings, bamboo ware and other traditional crafts of the Kingdom are available and in the evening you will drive to the viewpoint for a fascinating view of Thimphu valley which will mesmerize you for sure.

Have your breakfast in the morning and later on you will drive up to the Genekha village by a private vehicle. Genekha village is the trek commencing point and from here you will start your trek. You will cross a bridge over the Wang Chu (Thimpu River) and then you will follow a trail gradually going up through the oak forest and then to the rocky platform having a good platform to have a short break for rest, after resting for while you will have a gradual hike up through the birch and bamboo forest to reach your camp in a meadow at Gur. After reaching to Gur have a rest in your camp.

After having breakfast in the morning, you will start your hike towards Watching. You will ascend gradually up until you reach the alpine zone with the open views allowing you to have a picturesque village view down the valley. After hiking for some time you will reach to Gibze Kebze which is a campsite too and mostly trekkers use to camp in this place to get acclimatize but you will move on from here as well as today you will be ascending so the hike will be pretty tiring one so have frequent short breaks to get rest, after hiking for some time across hillsides lined with rhododendron to Pagalabsta La Pass (4170m) you can have the magnificent and panoramic views of the Dagala range and from there you will continue descending to stone yak herders hut at Watching. After reaching Watching have a rest in your Camp and later on, you can stroll the surroundings as well.

Accommodation: Overnight camp in Wataching.

After Breakfast, you will start trekking across the ridges. One can enjoy the beauty of the rugged mountain vegetation. Today’s trek is amidst flowers and wild asparagus (in spring). The meadow freshens the trekkers with poetic sentiments. The first pass (4250 m) symbolized by a huge Cairns gives a spectacular view of the whole ‘Dagala’ range, meadows, and yak herders camp. Lunch at nearby yak herder’s camp. After lunch, walk across hills and meadows, ending the third day of the trek at Labatamba. Camp near ‘Utso’ lake where golden trout flourish.

Accommodation: Overnight camp at Labatamba.

After having your Breakfast, you will start walking upwards for half an hour and then descend. Today your path will present you with a majestic view of Himalayan peaks (alt. 4,450). The prominent peaks such as Mt. Everest, Kanchenjunga, Chomolhari, Jichu Drake, Tsering Khang, Khangbum, Masagang, Tsendegang, and Gangchecn Ta can be seen from here. Apart from yaks and horses, Himalayan Monal Pheasants are a common sight en route. You will get some free time in Panka, your camping site. You can spend your time roaming around the camp.

After breakfast in the morning, you will be walking through several interesting passes. The area is also known for different varieties of Blue-poppy (June-July) and mountain birds. The trail ascends along the western side of a lake to saddle at 4,400 m, where there are fascinating mountain views. In the afternoon, an hour's gradual climb brings you to the tip of the last Dagala range from where the view of Thimphu valley is superb. Further, you will hike down from the mixed forest of fir, juniper, rhododendron, rose, bamboo and birch and finally you will reach the Talakha Monastery from where you can have a tremendous view over the Thimpu valley and outdoor bathtub make for a memorable stay.

Accommodation: Overnight at a camp near the Talakha Monastery.

Take your breakfast in your camp and start hiking downhill on a steep, eroded trail to Simtokha amidst forests of rhododendron and bamboo and apple orchards. Visit Simtokha Dzong, the oldest fortress of the Kingdom built in 1627, which now houses the School for Buddhist studies. After an hour hike, you will reach your trek ending a place at Simtokha and from here you will ride the vehicle which will be ready at Simtokha Dzong drive back to Paro via Thimphu. Enjoy the landscape and the vegetation on the way while you get back to Paro. After reaching Paro, check-in hotel and have rest, later on, you can explore the Paro city and the local streets.

Have your breakfast in the hotel in the early morning and later on our office representative will transfer you to the airport for flight to your onward destination.
